Do you need to train for strength to build muscle?

Strength training or "basic strength" is training that is done in the 3-6 rep range. If your goal is purely to put on muscle size, you may sometimes wonder if there are any benefits to training for strength. Should you occasionally train with very heavy loads or would you be better suited always training for hypertrophy only? Will you leave gains on the table by avoiding strength training all together?
